If you ever have any cool suggestions, just let me know and we can see about getting BreakingT to make it happen for us.Three numbers show Cowboys’ defense isn’t remotely close to elite The one constant to the Jason Garrett era of the Dallas Cowboys has been a defense that has vacillated between mediocre and downright terrible. Until recently that is. In fact, the Dallas Cowboys 2018 defense currently ranks among the best in the league, ranking seventh in points allowed and fifth in yards allowed. We can see this is the culmination of a long-term trend of the Cowboys’ defense slowly and methodically improving from historically bad (2013) to mediocre (2015) to top ten (2018). This is a terrific development. Cowboys fans have, for years, watched the team lose important games when the defense simply couldn’t stop opponents from putting up video game-like numbers in key late-season and post-season games. Consider how the Cowboys’ seasons ended in recent years when the team was good enough to compete or advance to the playoffs:Those defensive numbers are simply horrific in every way:29 points allowed per game400 yards allowed per gameThree turnovers generated in five games or 0.6 per gameIt’s virtually impossible to win games against quality opponents when the defense is surrendering 30 points, 400 yards and recording no turnovers. Yet that’s what Cowboys’ offenses have been asked to overcome for the duration of the Garrett era. Until now it seems. The current defense has the league’s leading sack-master. There’s also a corner no one wants to throw against. These are both features we haven’t seen in years. Add an athletic, young linebacking corps and there’s lots to like about this defense. And yet, there are three numbers that should give every Cowboys’ fan pause. Because these numbers resemble past numbers in almost every way. More importantly, if these numbers continue, this 2018 defense will disappoint just as past defenses have. Let’s take a look at each one. 3rd Down Conversion RateWhile Dallas has consistently improved in recent years in points and yards allowed, the same cannot be said for allowing teams to convert third downs. In fact, the 2018 squad is currently allowing teams to convert 45% of third downs www.philadelphiaeaglesteamonlines.com , which ranks 26th in the entire league. We see this is similar to last season and is markedly worse than the 2015-2016 units. It is, however, very similar to the 2014 squad that ended up allowing the Green Bay Packers to convert nine of thirteen third down attempts in the team’s division round match-up. In short, despite having an elite pass-rusher the team continues to allow defenses to convert third downs and move the chains. An inability to get off the field is a defensive weakness that will show up again and again against above average offenses. Red Zone Conversion RateMost red zone analysis look at number of touchdowns scored versus number of attempts. Thus, if a team enters the red zone four times and scores touchdowns two times they’ll assign that team a 50% conversion rate. I look at it differently. I consider each red zone entry an opportunity to score seven points. I then divide the number of points actually scored by the number of points available. Thus, if a team had four red zone opportunities and converted those into two touchdowns and two successful field goals they scored 20 out of a possible 28 points:(Actual points scored)/(Available points) or (20/28) = 71.5%This approach allows us to account for made and missed field goals as well as turnovers. And in this area the 2018 Cowboys are failing. They are currently allowing teams to convert red zone opportunities at a 65% rate. This number is worse when you consider the team did well against the Panthers in week one (giving up 16 points in five red zone opportunities).
Since then, Dallas has surrendered 34 points in six red zone opportunities (5.7 points per opportunity/81% conversion rate). In short, the Dallas defense hasn’t been as good near the goal-line as it has been beyond the 20-yard line. And the numbers are largely affected by an event we’ve seen far too rarely: a turnover. The Dallas defense forced a turnover on the very first drive of the season. Daniel Ross caused a fumble on the Carolina Panthers initial drive of the season opener inside the Cowboys’ five-yard line. DeMarcus Lawrence recovered the ball for a huge play that helped keep that game close early. Without that play the Cowboys’ red zone numbers would be even worse. Which brings us to our third and most important number:Turnovers caused: twoIt’s almost mind-numbing to consider the realities of the Cowboys’ current turnover situation. Generally, having an active, dynamic, athletic defense would lead to turnovers. A pass rush that disrupts opposing quarterbacks should lead to bad decisions, deflections and poor throws that inevitably result in interceptions and quarterback fumbles. Add athletic, mobile linebackers and sticky corner backs and conventional wisdom says turnovers should be coming in droves. Not so with this defense. The team currently sits in 32nd place out of 32 teams in turnovers caused. That’s bad; really bad. But we’ve seen this before:The above shows us that since ranking second in the league with 31 turnovers caused in 2014 the Cowboys have never been above league average since. We also see that for the second time in four years the team is dead last. The 2015 squad set a modern NFL record by recording only eleven turnovers in sixteen games (0.69 turnovers per game). And yet Philadelphia Eagles T-Shirt , the current defense again ranks dead last in turnovers. In fact, the team is on pace to record only eight turnovers on the season, which would best the Cowboys’ previous modern-day record. The Cowboys’ defensive secondary is no longer surrendering huge volumes of yards as past editions have but it’s also not recording any turnovers. The team ranks dead last with zero interceptions. The defense has forced only three fumbles on the season (recovering two). It’s hard to explain or isolate why this is happening but it is.Turnover margin is the single biggest number that correlates with winning in the NFL; much more so than yards gained. Thus, unless this defense can somehow start doing what it hasn’t done thus far the 2018 season is likely to end in disappointment for Cowboys’ fans. Now, turnovers are somewhat mercurial. That 2014 Cowboys team that ranked second in the league in turnovers generated wasn’t particularly special. It ranked 19th in yards allowed, 15th in points allowed and recorded only 28 sacks. There was nothing about that team that made you think it would be a top-five turnover machine. Yet it somehow found a way to take the ball away from opponent’s 31 times. Turnovers, it seems, are a mysterious and unpredictable element of NFL football. Thus, it’s very concerning that this otherwise quality Cowboys defense seems completely incapable of taking the ball away. Unless and until that changes, it’s unlikely this team will succeed in any way.

If there is one aspect of the Pittsburgh Steelers offense which constantly befuddles me Ramon Foster Jersey , it is how since Bruce Arians retired/was fired the team has not run as much play action as they once did.A large reason for the team bringing in Todd Haley after Arians’ departure was to help keep Ben Roethlisberger healthy. Shortly upon his arrival, the 8-step drop backs for Roethlisberger started to diminish, and the quick-hitting timing routes became more of an onus within the offense. While Arians, and other coordinators like Ken Whisenhunt, loved to run play action and chuck it deep, it wasn’t the forte of Haley. But what about new offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner? It is a small sample size, but early indications are Fichtner wants to run more play action than his predecessor, but the plays themselves might look different.Take a look at what play action passing might resemble in the new-style offense Fichtner has been running off of Haley’s offensive skeleton.Again, with only two weeks under the team’s belt, it is too early to tell if the play action passing game will become a staple, or just a weekly feature depending on matchups. However, when comparing this season to 2017, there is already an uptick in play-action passing.If you are like me, you are hoping for even more play action passing in the future, and it is worth noting the team would have to establish a running game for the play action to be truly effective. Sure Cheap Cameron Heyward Jersey , you can always freeze the linebackers with a play action play, but to get the secondary to bite on the fake as well, that is where you make your real money. As the Steelers now prepare for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, establishing the run, and utilizing play action might just be the trick against a very aggressive defense who will want to fly to the ball and make plays. The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't surprised by the success of second-year running back James Conner.Conner continues to shine in the spotlight while two-time All-Pro running back Le'Veon Bell remains away from the team. Conner enjoyed a history-making day, accounting for more than 200 all-purpose yards during the Steelers' 33-18 home win against Cleveland on Sunday."He's doing what he's been doing the whole time," Steelers right guard David DeCastro said. "He's keeping his head down and running really hard. He's a fun guy to block for."Bell, who finished as the NFL's third-leading rusher last season, still has not reported nor signed his one-year, $14.5 million franchise tender.Conner has taken full advantage while Bell has been away.He finished Sunday's game with 212 all-purpose yards, just 25 fewer than the Browns totaled as a team. Conner, a 2017 third-round pick, rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 66 yards."I'm just doing what I love to do," Conner said. "Just trying to be in the right spots for (quarterback) Ben (Roethlisberger) with the check-downs in the passing game Cheap Sean Davis Jersey , and just trying to put the ball in the right spots in the right game."He also made history while he was at it.
Conner is the first Steeler to rush for at least 100 yards and two touchdowns in three straight games. He eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the third straight game and fifth time this season."He did a lot of good things (against Cleveland), running the ball and catching the ball for us," Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey said. "He just looks good all the way around and runs the ball hard. He takes it very seriously and his preparation is very good. He has 281 yards rushing, 404 all-purpose and four touchdowns in two games against the Browns.It wasn't easy for Conner on Sunday: Conner had 36 yards rushing on his first 12 carries. "We have the ball, trying to run the clock out and we need first downs. We're just trying to move those chains and stay on the field."Conner seeks a strong finish to the season, of course."I'm just trying to be a better back every week," Conner said. The Eagles opened as three-point favorites for their game in Tennessee and some gambling sites now have Philadelphia favored by four points. It’s not difficult to see why the reigning Super Bowl champions are favored here. Yeah Cheap Cameron Johnston Jersey , the Titans just beat the Jaguars in Jacksonville, but it was a very close and ugly game with a final score of 9 to 6. Moreover, the Titans’ quarterback situation is not ideal right now. Blaine Gabbert had to start last week with Marcus Mariota still dealing with a pinched nerve in his elbow. When Gabbert got knocked out of the game, Mariota was thrust into action and actually did OK for a guy who lacks feeling in his fingers. The Oregon Ducks alumnus completed 12 of his 18 attempts for 100 yards, zero touchdowns, zero interceptions Cheap Sidney Jones Jersey , and a 80.8 passer rating. He also contributed with seven rushing attempts for 51 yards. But Mariota’s limitations were clear and they might continue to be a problem moving forward. Check out these Rotoworld write-ups:As we saw in Week 2, Jim Schwartz’s defense has had issues playing away from the home confines of Lincoln Financial Field. Since 2016, the Eagles are allowing 27.5 points per game in road tilts. With Mariota being less than 100%, though, this could be an opportunity for the Eagles to reverse that trend, at least for one week.Elsewhere Youth Ronald Darby Jersey , the Eagles might be getting some good news on the injury front this week. It seems like Alshon Jeffery might have a shot to return against the Titans. Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles are also expected to return to practice this week in some capacity. And then there’s the fact Carson Wentz is back under center for the Eagles. He looked a little rusty in his first game played since December 2017 but he also showed plenty of encouraging signs that bode well for the Eagles moving forward.
The Titans have played teams tough this year. Their only defeat so far is a one-possession loss to a 3-0 Dolphins team on the road in Miami. I don’t expect them to just lay down and take a beating.With that said, there’s rightful reason for the Eagles to be favored this week.Jason Peters injury update following Eagles vs. Giants Eagles starting left tackle Jason Peters suffered a biceps injury that caused him to leave Philadelphia’s 34-13 win over the New York Giants early on Thursday evening.Doug Pederson didn’t give much of an update on his status after the game, but Peters did tell reporters that he’s “OK.”While it’s good to see Peters say this, his assessment needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Remember how Rodney McLeod said he felt fine after the Eagles’ Week 3 game but it was later discovered he suffered a torn MCL? The good news is we’re hearing Peters might be OK to play through his biceps injury. From NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Derrick Gunn:It’s unclear exactly when the MRI will take place but you can bet Pederson will be asked about Peters’ status during his noon press conference today. So hopefully we’ll find out more then. If not, stay tuned for more reports on Peters’ status.In the meantime, here’s some more medical context on Peters’ injury from former NFL team doctor David Chao:In other injury news Cheap Carson Wentz Jersey , Pederson said Lane Johnson could’ve stayed in the game last night if the Eagles really needed him to play. In every single must-win game they’ve faced this season, they’ve risen to the occasion and won. They’ve improved on both sides of the ball dramatically and finally deserve to be viewed as one of the best teams in the AFC. Can they compete with those top-level teams? Thursday night will be a big test to see if they can indeed compete with upper-echelon teams. Here are eight takeaways from this big win over the Ravens:Joshua Dobbs > Landry JonesI really don’t have to say much about Dobbs today. He made an absolutely huge throw and called an audible on it too. That not only was a gutsy play-call, but a frozen rope perfectly placed by Dobbs. He’s a young kid who I believe really has some nice potential to grow into far more than a backup. Landry Jones is who he is.A decent backup who cannot become anything more than that. Dobbs, on the other hand, oozes potential and could possibly emerge as the heir to the Steelers’ QB position. Jones was the riskier cut due to the need to win now, but Dobbs was a vote for the future, and the Steelers stuck by that brilliantly. Just a clutch play by Dobbs.The refs were terribleI can’t say enough about how bad they were. From the “fumble” or “interception” at the end of the half, which was not even close and cost the Steelers 10 seconds, to the egregiously bad pass-interference calls — they called everything that shouldn’t have been called and didn’t call the things that should be called.They missed a few holds on Cam Heyward throughout the game, and Bud Dupree was being held all day. You want to know why Bud wasn’t seen as much as you thought he would against a guy who struggles against speed rushers — because he was being held and it was never called.It was the Steelers against the refs on Sunday.Mike Hilton needs to get paid — NOWI’m not wrong in saying Hilton is the best run-defending nickel-CB in the league. And he’s pretty darned good in coverage too. No doubt, if not for Chris Harris Jr., Hilton would be the best slot-CB in the NFL. He’s never beaten and he makes an impact in all areas of the field.I said in a film room last week how the Steelers use him much like a small LB, and that rings true. Hilton is essential to this team and he deserves to be paid accordingly. I hope he gets his payday because he’s simply amazing for this team.Get Sean Davis paid tooThe biggest game-changer in the secondary isn’t Joe Haden but Sean Davis. We knew Haden could be a lock-down guy and he’s been just that, but Davis had been an uncertainty at a position where the Steelers haven’t had a true centerfielder since Troy Polamalu.Davis is that guy. He’s been fantastic in coverage and has tackled well too. With him now gaining confidence, he’s flying around the field and showing, not only his sound self with great tackling ability, but also his aggressive self. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get an INT or two in the next few weeks. Davis is what you would call, ascending. Time for him to get him paid, too. Terrell Edmunds has had a rough go of things, but he’s progressingI love Tom Bradley so far. Look what he’s done to reinvigorate Joe Haden, transform Sean Davis, and even have Hilton elevate his level of play.But his best work presently is going on with rookie Terrell Edmunds. Edmunds hasn’t been good to start the season, but he’s shown the progression and flashes you want to see from a raw prospect. He’s been showing more and more ball skills, and his angles are slowly but steadily improving. Edmunds still needs to learn the nuances of the position, but you can already see Bradley is working his magic here. So far, I like the hire. Now, if he can just turn Artie Burns around.James Washington is finally flashingDid Washington have a great game? No. But I could see his progression from the games prior to the bye-week. Washington looks far smoother and finally seems to have a semblance of timing with Roethlisberger. His releases have gotten much better, and he was open more than he was targeted today. I’m looking forward to the all-22 on Washington, as you could see him finally use his hands to get press off of him. It’s been small steps for Washington, but don’t worry, he’ll come along. Washington will be the answer at WR3.Don’t look now, but Bud Dupree might be turning a cornerBoth literally, because he’s finally developing, and figuratively because Youth Antonio Brown Jersey , well, this is easily his best season. Is Dupree just one of those late bloomers? I have no clue, but it’s undeniable that he’s having a good season. Dupree has been average in some games, but his bend was always there, now he’s finding out how to use his hands to leverage his speed in getting around the edge. He’s become so much more disciplined too, and doesn’t get run up the arc. The biggest difference is his pre-snap mind. He clearly has a plan and goes with it. He needs to use his hands to win inside now and to find more explosiveness on his first step — but I like where Dupree is going. Dupree has already exceeded his 2017 “pressures” total of 40, and already has eight QB hits, which means he’s easily on pace for a career high. There might be some additional upside left in him.Jesse James can burn CBsPrayers to Brandon Carr — I don’t know how you get burnt by Jesse James, especially when he’s as slow as he is, but this double-move has Carr biting. So Jesse James deserves to beheavily crowned in all areas.Former Steelers that didn’t survive cut-down day with other franchises While Steelers Nation and players alike constantly were checking their electronic devices and phones all day long to see which names would wind up on the 2018 53-man roster, men with ties to the Black-and-gold awaited their fates in other cities as well. While the biggest name on the list was Martavis Bryant, due to his dismissal in Oak-town, other names familiar to Steelers fans are now looking for love from other organizations.WR Martavis Bryant-OaklandWhile the former fourth-rounder from 2014 was slow to pick up John Gruden’s offense, the decision to cut losses with Bryant ultimately stemmed from reports of another looming suspension. The trade of Martavis for a third-rounder looks even more brilliant now. As a Steeler, Bryant had 1,988 total yards and 18 TDs, playing in only 36 games of a possible 72. His personal demons led to suspensions and destroyed what might have been a brilliant career.Photo by Justin K. Leaving town as a free agent in 2017, Wheaton tanked in Chicago and signed with the Super Bowl champs in 2018.OL Kyle Friend-CarolinaThe undrafted lineman from Mechanicsburg initially went to the Jets in 2016. Eventually, on and off of the practice squad there, Friend spent 2017 on Pittsburgh’s practice squad. In May, the Center ended up signing with Carolina before becoming a camp casualty.OG Ethan Cooper-Kansas CityThe undrafted free agent from IUP was a late-2017 cut by the Steelers. The Division II All-American in ‘16 spent a part of last year on the Giants’ PS. Cooper spent 2018 in two training camps with Green Bay and KC. WR Cobi Hamilton-Indianapolis This guy was picked in Round 6 by Cincy in 2013 and spent two stints there (with one in Philly in between), almost entirely on the practice squad. Hamilton had brief stints in Miami and Carolina before joining the Steelers in August of ‘16. In October of that year, No. 83 was promoted to the 53-man roster and played a significant role that year during the regular season and playoffs.
Cobi was a final cut in 2017 and bounced around with the Texans, Cardinals and Colts. But most of his career success, was as a Steeler.CB Doran Grant-ChicagoThe Ohio State Buckeye was picked in Round 4 by the Steelers in 2015. He never graduated from the off-season roster or practice squad with Buffalo, the Giants, Jacksonville and now the Bears.TE Scott Orndoff-Jacksonville Seton-La Salle’s Orndoff received an injury settlement from the Steelers last year after staying at home as an UDFA. Since then, the talented TE from Pitt tried to catch on with Detroit, spent time on Cincy’s practice squad in 2017 and went to camp with the Jags in 2018.LB Terence Garvin-MiamiGarvin was well-regarded due to his successful minicamp tryout with the Steelers in 2013. Initially assigned to the practice squad, Garvin joined the active roster less than a week later. Earning his keep as a special-teamer, the West Virginia Mountaineer notoriously broke the jaw of Cincy Punter Kevin Huber later that year. After three years as a Steeler Black James Conner Jersey , Garvin was a Redskin in 2016 and a Seahawk in 2017. Garvin signed with the Dolphins in 2018, but didn’t make the 53-man squad.RB Terrell Watson-Los Angeles Chargers Cincinnati signed the UFDA running back in 2015 and he spent all of that year on the practice squad. He was on the practice squad in Cleveland, Denver and Philadelphia in 2016. In Philly, he played one game on the active roster and scored a TD. “The Nightmare” was a camp phenom for the Steelers in 2017 and lasted on the 53-man roster before finishing the year on the practice squad. Signed to a futures deal with Minnesota, Cashaud was waived in May and landed in Denver in June.S Shamarko Thomas-DenverThe Steelers were so enamored with the Syracuse Orangeman that they traded a third-rounder in 2014 to select him in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft. He rarely made an impact, though, and was placed on the IR on Christmas Eve of 2016. That concluded his career in the Burgh. In 2017, Shamarko was a final cut of the Jets. He ended up in a Buffalo uniform for the remainder of the season. This season, he was cut by Indy on August 11th and by the Broncos yesterday.WR Demarcus Ayers-Chicago Ayers was a seventh-rounder of the Steelers in 2016 and spent most of the year on the practice squad. In December of that year, the Houston Cougar was promoted and showed flashes of brilliance during his short tenure, including seven catches and a score in the season finale. Ayers was a final cut in 2017 and declined the practice squad in favor of the same role in New England. Released 23 days later, Ayers joined the Bears practice squad and signed a futures deal there in January.Photo by Justin K. The Bills signed Scott and he remained in Buffalo for the remainder of the season. From there, he spent four years in Carolina and played in Super Bowl 50. In 2018, he went to camp with the Giants.C Wesley Johnson-DetroitThe Steelers’ fifth-rounder in 2014 out of Vanderbilt, playing behind Maurkice Pouncey and Cody Wallace, was waived in October of that year and ended up with the Jets shortly after. The Steelers’ Monday night game against the Buccaneers had four such penalties — the most in a single NFL game since 2001. With each penalty yielding an automatic first down, it’s a call that can change the landscape of any game.Throughout the league, there have been 33 accepted roughing-the-passer penalties so far in 2018. Over the last 10 years, there have been only five weeks in an NFL season where the number of roughing-the-passer penalties have hit double digits. Two of those five weeks are in 2018. Week 1 of this season and its 15 accepted penalties is on the very top of the list, with this past week of 12 penalties coming in third. Only Week 6 of the 2015 season separates those two with 13 penalties.Since 2009, the NFL has averaged 18.2 roughing-the-passer penalties during the first three weeks of the season. If the trend of 33 roughing penalties already amassed in 2018 continues throughout the regular season and playoffs, the projected number of penalties called would reach 184. To put this in perspective, there would be 77 more roughing penalties than in any other season during the last 10 years, and more than twice the average over that same time span.The reason for the increase in penalties can be attributed to the “point of emphasis” the league has placed on certain aspects of the rule. This practice isn’t new to the NFL’s evolution of roughing-the-passer penalties. In 2009, hitting a quarterback low was emphasized as roughing after Tom Brady was lost in Week 1 of the previous season. As the concern with head injuries has increased across the board, any contact to the quarterback’s head has now become a roughing penalty as well. A prime example is from Monday night’s game when Ben Roethlisberger was struck in the head by Jason Pierre-Paul.With the targeting zone in which a quarterback can be hit shrinking down from both the top and bottom, the point of emphasis this year is calling a roughing penalty when the defender is “falling with all or most of his body weight on the quarterback.” Interesting enough, it doesn’t matter at what point the quarterback releases the ball. It’s not about hitting him late; the penalty could be called even if the quarterback never gets the pass away.The reason for this emphasis is, once again, based on an injury the previous year. When Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone in Week 6 last season, the Green Bay Packers’ season took a turn for the worse. Losing a player of Rodgers’ caliber is detrimental to the NFL and its money-making machine. It would be on a similar level as the NBA losing LeBron James for half a season. Ironically, it’s Rogers’ own Green Bay Packers that currently lead the league in roughing-the-quarterback penalties with five violations. Many self-proclaimed “football purists” are claiming the league is trying to turn the game into two-hand touch. Why is the NFL going to such lengths to protect the quarterback? I believe the answer is twofold. First, the quarterback position is the most marquee position on the field. Most football fans realize this fact. It’s the position most difficult to replace and thus commands the highest salary. Secondly, the quarterback is in the most vulnerable player on the field when attempting to pass. Once a quarterback drops back and is standing in the pocket, those players attempting to tackle him are moving at a much higher relative velocity. The quarterback isn’t exactly motionless, but he’s not traveling at a high rate of speed. The defenders, on the other hand, ate attempting to get to the quarterback as fast as possible. This puts the passer in a very precarious position. This situation is much like a shortstop being targeted when someone slides into second base to break up a double play. Another example is when a hockey player crashes into the goalie. The person not moving at a high rate of speed is the one who takes the brunt of the collision.So there’s a rationale behind protecting quarterbacks. But what are defenders to do? It seems as if the league has taken away the proper technique for tackling. The way I see it Authentic James Conner Jersey , there’s only one way (for now) to safely tackle the quarterback. The Competition Committee held a conference call this week to address the situation, but as most football experts predicted, there will be no change pertaining to how the plays are called. It’s going be up to defenders to learn a new “wrap, drop and pull” technique, in order to avoid any roughing penalties. This new technique should work — until a quarterback gets hurt by having his leg rolled on by a falling defender — or the quarterback’s head gets whipped to the ground.
