An extra point and a field goal shorter than an extra point, both missed. Graham has missed an extra point or two, but his field goal streak heading into this game was pretty spectacular. So many drops, costing this team first downs or points on the board. He has been prone to a drop or two here and there over the course of his career, but this was probably the worst streak that I can remember. If he plans on securing a decent contract at the end of the season Carolina Panthers T-Shirts , he has to show he can be a reliable pass catching target, because he’s more of a possession receiver than anything. The Carolina Panthers struggled to get anything going on either side of the ball in the first half of their Week 7 tilt against the Philadelphia Eagles. The offense generated just 83 total yards and failed to convert a single third down while the defense let Carson Wentz and the Eagles march up and down the field to the tune of 222 yards of total offense. The Panthers finally managed to work their way into Philadelphia territory on their fourth drive of the game, but it ultimately stalled out at the Eagles 21 yard line. A pair of false starts on the ensuing field goal attempts pushed the Panthers out of field goal range, and they punted. The decision to punt when facing a 49 yard field goal in those wind conditions was fine. Gano had just missed the 44 yard attempt after the false start and it didn’t appear as though it would have the distance to clear from any farther back. Michael Palardy rewarded the decision with a beautiful punt that was downed at the Eagles four yard line.The Panthers defense took the field with two timeouts and the two minute warning to play with. The Eagles, with their backs literally against the wall, handed the ball to Corey Clement on first down to run the clock down to the two minute warning. After the stoppage, the Eagles again elected to run, making it very clear that they had no intent to move the ball before the half. Ron Rivera should have jumped at this opportunity to give his team some momentum before the half. Had the Panthers called a timeout after the Eagles second down run, they would have needed only one stop to put the ball back in Cam Newton’s hands with about 90 seconds remaining in the half and the Panthers starting somewhere around their own 40 yard line. Instead, Rivera accepted the Eagles decision to run the clock down, apparently content with a 10-0 halftime deficit. He showed no faith in his defense to pick up a third down stop, even though the Eagles had failed to convert a single third down by that point in the game. He showed no faith in his offense to move the ball roughly 30 yards in a minute and a half, a task that almost any NFL offense should be able to handle. He forewent a chance to build some momentum because of a negligible amount of risk associated with stopping the clock and fielding a punt in favor of a decision that contained zero risk and zero reward.
