He averaged 26.2 yards per reception which was tied for second most in the NFL among players with at least five receptions. All the hard work he had put in during training camp had paid off. After being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2018, Sims made the Redskins 53-man opening day roster. His spot on that roster however was very short-lived. On the opening kickoff of the Redskins first regular season game, Sims suffered a high ankle sprain that landed him on Injured Reserve. Despite returning to full health just over a month later, the rookie was not designated to return, and spent the rest of the season watching from the sideline as his position mates struggled through a disappointing season. Despite his potential, all the recent talk after the 2019 draft has been on new-comers Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon. But what about Cam Sims?Sims was a heralded high school recruit out of Louisiana who committed to the rival Crimson Tide. He never really made much of an impact in Tuscaloosa however, catching just 41 career passes for 467 yards and two touchdowns while battling injuries. He was not invited to attend the 2018 NFL Combine, so he had to impress scouts at Alabama’s Pro Day - and impress them he did!In front of Redskins President Bruce Allen, and a contingent of team scouts, Sims measured in at 6’5” and 215 pounds. He then proceeded to run the 40 yard dash as low as 4.52 on some teams watches, while recording a vertical of 34 inches and a broad jump of 10’3”. It was his on-field work, however, that impressed scouts the most Samaje Perine Jersey , as the sticky-handed receiver caught everything thrown his way, and looked fluid and under control in his routes.Although his Pro Day was not enough to get him drafted, the Redskins saw enough to sign him as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2018. Sims went on to have an excellent training camp, drawing rave reviews from head coach Jay Gruden and Doug Williams. Sims will be entering 2019 with a new group of receivers he’ll need to distinguish himself from. The team’s top receiver over the last few seasons, Jamison Crowder, left via free agency. The Redskins used a third and sixth round pick in the 2019 NFL draft on Ohio State’s Terry McLaurin and N.C. State’s Kelvin Harmon. The two are expected to compete with incumbents Josh Doctson and Paul Richardson for starting spots. But don’t count out Sims. The second year pro has the measurables, skill and attitude to steal a starting role as the team’s X receiver. If he can develop chemistry with new quarterback Dwayne Haskins, and make plays like this, it will be hard to keep him off the field. Sims is also an excellent blocker and willing special teams players. Josh Doctson does neither, so Sims may have to really distinguish himself in these areas yet again if he hopes to have an impact in 2019.The Redskins are likely to carry six wide receivers on the 2019 roster. Will Sims be one of them?
