Jets Helmet Stickers: Week 5 Boy Youth Le’Veon Bell Jersey , this was a fun one to watch. Not only did the Jets dominate from top to bottom, if a few pass interference calls had been caught and the Jets had avoided fluky turnovers and missed gimme field goals, this would have been a total blowout of the Broncos. The offensive line deserves a big shout out for looking excellent against a very talented, but underperforming front 7. They’ve been atrocious for most of the season, but the OL propelled the Jets success at times and gave Crowell enough to dominate. Darnold also had a nice bounceback game despite the strange statline, and threw a few beautiful balls. Guys like Adams and Henry Anderson also continued to play very well, even though it was a particularly strange game in which the most maligned Jets dominated and the most consistent Jets disappointed. The only two bright spots thus far on offense, Quincy Enunwa and Bilal Powell, both had poor games, although Powell did redeem himself somewhat with some solid play after a rare fumble threatened to put the Jets well behind the eight ball early. Enunwa, on the other hand, was absolutely terrible, though Eagle and Fouts did note that he wasn’t entirely healthy. Also, side note: Eagle and Fouts are probably my favorite broadcast team Le’Veon Bell Jersey Stitched , they almost always have their facts in order and have good chemistry. Let’s get more of those guys, NFL. Anyway, back to the top performers: Bronze Star: WR Robby Anderson (3 receptions for 123 yards, 2 TDs)Leading into week 5, Anderson was beginning to look like a one hit wonder. He showed little to no chemistry with Darnold, with only one impressive connection in which Darnold actually underthrew him by a bit, reinforcing that lack of chemistry, even on a long touchdown pass. Well, that narrative could go by the wayside if he puts together a few more of these games. Enunwa didn’t look right out there and Anderson picked up the slack, torching Roby and taking it to the house. He followed that up with another long touchdown on an absolute dime from Darnold. If he and Enunwa can start putting together more consistent games, the Jets may actually have a passing offense this year. Silver Star: DL Leonard Williams (5 tackles, 2 sacks)Williams desperately needs a good season to prove himself to fans that are sick of hearing about hidden production. The fact is that Williams has been a very good player for the Jets, even sneaking into one Pro Bowl, but most would have expected more from the 7th overall pick who was touted as the “best player in the draft.” This was the type of game people expected of him in his 4th season Infant Blake Cashman Jersey , racking up 2 sacks in which he was actually involved in 3 total sacks. The hidden production was still evident, but he finally put together some of the numbers that people hoped he would be able to produce regularly. A few more games like this and he might prove himself worthy of that top pick billing.Gold Star: RB Isaiah Crowell (15 rushes for 219 yards, 1 reception for 12 yards, 1 TD) What can you say about this game other than “Wow.” Crowell shrugged off the bad press and a bad game against Jacksonville by setting both Jets and NFL records, and he looked good doing it. Whether it was the longest Jets TD rush since 1996 or a simple 3rd and short in which he humiliated one of the better run stuffers in the NFL, Crowell just would not be denied. I can’t think of any more impressive performance by a Jets running back in recent years, and Chris Ivory had some gems to remember. Crowell absolutely deserves a gold star for this performance, which was easily the single best game a Jet has had this season. So there you have it, five weeks in and the table stands:Jamal Adams 5 points (2 silver, 1 bronze)Quincy Enunwa 4 points (1 gold, 1 bronze)Darron Lee 4 points (2 silver)Isaiah Crowell 3 points (1 gold)Henry Anderson 3 points (1 gold)Avery Williamson 3 points (1 gold)Andre Roberts 3 points (1 gold)Leonard Williams 2 points (1 silver)Bilal Powell 2 points (2 bronze)Robby Anderson 1 point (1 bronze) Sam Darnold has had the typical start for a rookie quarterback in the NFL, showcasing some eye-popping highs and some face-palming lows. All in all, his numbers line up almost dead on with the league average expectancy for rookies in recent history. Over the past decade (from 2008-2017), 21 rookie quarterbacks have thrown 100 passes or more over their team’s first five games of the season. Those players posted an average passer rating of 74.8 - Darnold is currently at 77.2. There have been players who have gone on to become greats who have started off worse (Russell Wilson Blake Cashman Jersey Draft , Matt Ryan), and players who went on to become busts who started off better (Robert Griffin III, Geno Smith, EJ Manuel).Still, it’s interesting to chop up the numbers and see exactly which situations a quarterback has thrived and struggled. While looking through Darnold’s splits, I noticed a particular area where the discrepancy in his production is noticeably large. He has produced at elite levels on 3rd down, but put up backup-quality numbers on 1st and 2nd down.Sam Darnold, on 3rd down:*- Ranks among the 29 quarterbacks with 30+ passing attempts on 3rd down.Raw numbers: 22/43, 344 yards, 5 touchdowns, 1 interception.107.1 passer rating (4th)8.0 yards per attempt (7th)15.6 yards per completion (1st)51.2% completion rate (27th)5 touchdowns (2nd)1 interception (T-11th fewest)13 first down completions (T-13th)Sam Darnold, on 1st and 2nd down:*- Ranks among the 27 quarterbacks with 90+ passing attempts on 1st-2nd down.Raw numbers: 58/102, 687 yards, 2 touchdowns Blake Cashman NFL Jersey , 5 interceptions.63.6 passer rating (27th)6.7 yards per attempt (26th)11.8 yards per completion (12th)56.9% completion rate (27th)2 touchdowns (27th)5 interception (T-4th most) > 4.9% INT rate, 2nd highest29 first down completions (27th)What gives? On the early downs, Darnold has easily been the league’s worst starter. He’s gotten yardage out of the passes he has completed, but he has turned the ball over too much and has not made nearly enough plays. On 3rd down, Darnold has been explosive, throwing the second most touchdowns with 4 of those coming from a distance of 20+ yards. He’s only thrown one interception, which was the deflected pass against Denver. He’s moved the chains at a league average rate. How does this compare to the other rookie quarterbacks? Let’s put Darnold’s numbers alongside those of the other rookies who have played significant time so far.3rd down:Darnold - 107.1 rating / 5 TD-1 INT / 8.0 Y/ABaker Mayfield - 75.5 / 0-1 / 8.2 Josh Rosen - 54.4 / 0-0 / 3.8Josh Allen - 36.6 / 0-3 / 6.21st-2nd down:Rosen - 96.1 / 2-0 / 7.9Mayfield - 85.4 / 3-2 / 7.8Allen - 69.0 / 2-2 / 5.8Darnold - 63.6 / 2-5 / 6.7What do you make of these numbers? Are these numbers just random chance? If not, is the gap on Darnold himself, or can some of it be attributed to play-calling?
