The date for the greatest spectacle in racing will be May 24, capping a month of events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It will start May 9 with a road course race, the Grand Prix of Indianapolis, then will continue the following weekend with qualifying for the 500 before the race itself on Memorial Day weekend. This years IndyCar series schedule will open with a new event on March 8 in Brazil on the Nelson Piquet road course in the capital of Brasilia. The slate will conclude on Aug. 30 in northern California on the Sonoma Raceway road course. It will mark the first time an IndyCar series champion will be crowned after a road event since 2007. Each of the last nine champions has been determined at the seasons final race, including Will Power in 2014. The North American portion of the schedule starts March 29 in Florida at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. It will be followed by a second new event on April 12, as the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana makes its debut at the NOLA Motorsports Park near New Orleans. Long Beach, California and Birmingham, Alabama return to conclude April, while the post-Indy 500 schedule includes Belle Isle Park at the end of May. June races will start at Texas Motor Speedway, continue on the streets of Toronto and conclude at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Oval races in Milwaukee and Iowa will take place in July before the three-race August calendar starts in Mid-Ohio and heads to Pocono before the season-ender in Sonoma.
