One of the biggest losses was right guard Brandon Scherff, who was lost for the year at midseason to a torn pectoral muscle.Scherff said this week that he feels he is back to about 90 percent and expects to be “ready to go” in time for training camp.“I think it was just a fluke injury Preston Smith Jersey ,” Scherff said, via the team’s website. “My arm got caught in a weird position, and my pec popped. But I ‘ole’ed’ outside, so I knew I needed to get back down to be able to make the tackle. I just saw the ball and I just grabbed it.”Miller said in the lead-up to the opener that he hates playing Wilson, whom he considers the best QB in the game. Yes, ahead of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, the only three who were ranked higher in The Associated Press quarterback rankings that came out Friday.“I still don’t like playing against Russell,” Miller said. “Running around out there, 20 yards, getting everybody tired. It’s a true blessing.”At one point Sunday, the giant scoreboard showed Miller inhaling oxygen on the sideline after one of his big plays and the crowd roared.“I wasn’t even paying attention and I look up and Case is telling everybody to be quiet,” Miller recounted. “I kind of felt bad for a second.”It wasn’t the only time Miller interrupted Keenum’s focus, either.Keenum normally spends his time between series on the bench studying pictures of formations and talking with to his coaches, “but it’s hard not to notice when the crowd’s going crazy and Von’s out there crawling or whatever he’s doing, whatever his sack dance is. That’s impressive to watch.“I’m glad I’m on the sidelines when he’s on the field, that’s for sure.”Wilson wasn’t so lucky.“I think that when it’s third-and-3 or 4, I’ve spun out and make a lot of plays,” Wilson said. “I would probably say most of the time it works.“With a guy like Von, sometimes it doesn’t.” Word had swirled since the weekend that Mike Munchak will be the Denver Broncos next head coach, even as John Elway’s interview with Vic Fangio lasted until dinner in Chicago on Monday night. The Broncos left for Denver without the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator in tow, so it’s time to speculate. Who do you got as the next Broncos head coach?I decided to take a look at what looks like the final two candidates depth. Vic FangioWe know that he’s as immersed in defensive strategy as anyone in football. Fangio’s NFL career began in 1986 with the New Orleans Saints and he’s served as a defensive coordinator for five different teams.From 1995 to 1998 he coached the Expansion Carolina Panthers. In their inaugural season Fangio’s defense finished 5th in FootballOutsiders DVOA, including 2nd against the pass. They were 6th in total D during ‘96 and had the best adjusted sack rate in the league. The pass rushing linebacker duo of Kevin Greene and Lamar Lothon combined for 28 sacks. From 1999 to 2001 Fangio was the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts under Jim Mora. The results with the Colts were mostly sub par, but the pass rush was elite in 2000. After 2001, he was hired again by Dom Capers to oversee another expansion defense, this time the Houston Texans. The D peaked at 18th in DVOA before bottoming out in 2005. After he was fired from Houston, Fangio worked in Baltimore under Rex Ryan and, in 2009 Greg Mattison. In 2010 he left the NFL for Stanford under Jim Harbaugh Shelby Harris Jersey , helping the current Michigan coach lead Elway’s Alma mater to 12-1 record.The Cardinal had one of the best scoring defenses under Fangio, which goes a way towards explaining why Harbaugh brought his coordinator with him when he took the San Francisco 49er job.Three out of the four years he was coordinating by the bay, Fangio’s defense finished with a top 5 DVOA rating. He accomplished this despite the fact that Aldon Smith was his only premier pass rushing threat. When Fangio was with the 49ers, he had 10 players combine for 19 Pro Bowl berths in his four seasons. Those same 10 players have exactly one Pro Bowl berth since he left. Six of those players never made the Pro Bowl before they played for Fangio and haven’t made it since he left.His most recent stop with the Chicago Bears started when John Fox hired Fangio in 2015. Every year the defense improved, even if only slightly at first. It wasn’t enough to save Fox though, who was fired after the 2017 season. When Matt Nagy was hired after the season, he made it a priority to resign Fangio and reportedly made him one of the highest paid coordinators in the league. It made sense: his return provided continuity for a defense that had improved from 30th in yards allowed the year before Fangio arrived to 10th in 2017; from 17th to 11th in rushing; 30th to seventh in passing; 17th to sixth in sacks; and 31st to ninth in points allowed.In 2018, the Bears were one of the best defenses in the modern history of football. Mike Munchak We know he’s loyal to a fault. After the Tennessee Titans 7-9 finish in 2013, management requested he replace six or more of his assistant coaches. Munchak refused to follow through on all of them and was fired. During his three years as head coach of the Titans, the team finished 13th, 30th, 21st in Football Outsiders total DVOA. That’s a bit discouraging on its head, but this isn’t: all three teams outperformed their expected win total. This was during the same time that the AFC South had pre-injury Andrew Luck carrying the Colts and Gary Kubiak’s Houston Texans looked like a Super Bowl sleeper. This idea that Munchak coming to Denver will fix all that ails the Broncos offensive line may be popular to the mainstream media, but it doesn’t hold up to any level of scrutiny. The Titans line in 2011 was the worst run blocking unit in football. They were good in power situations, but woeful in just about every other way. The 2011 Titans did allow only 24 sacks though. In 2012 the run blocking improved slightly, but they allowed more sacks. During Munchak’s last season with the Titans line ranked 29th in the league in power situations and allowed 37 sacks. So if Munchak won’t magically fix the line, why hire him? He’s safe, for one. Those Titans teams outplayed their talent and could have done more if they weren’t quarterbacked by Jake Locker, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and an ancient Matt Hasselback. Munchak’s leading receiver during his reign was Nate Washington. After he was fired, his replacement Ken Whisenhunt never won more than 2 games in a season. Still, the lieutenants will be really important. Munchak has never called plays on either side of the ball. Following reports that Elway blocked teams from interviewing Gary Kubiak, all signs point to him leading the offense. On Defense fans have been pining for Todd Bowles, but he’ll probably return to Bruce Arians’ staff if the CBS commentator comes out of retirement to coach the Buccaneers. Yesterday was one of the most amazing NFL Sundays I can remember. Not only did the Redskins escape the day without a loss Shawn Lauvao Jersey , but every single team in the NFC East took a beating. It feels like every team in our division has played three or four times since the last time the Redskins took the field. The manner in which our divisional brethren took their losses was also inspiring. Whether it be a record-setting kick off the foot of...Graham freaking Gano...or a loss to Kirk Cousins or even, well, any Dallas loss is inspiring—it was a very happy day in the Meringolo household yesterday. Coming off the bye week and watching the Eagles, Giants and Cowboys all lose before we take the field again is something that should be bottled up and sold as a magic elixir. The Redskins, at 2-1, have a little juice going into tonight’s tilt in New Orleans. The story is still going to be all about Drew Brees, but I love that. Nobody thinks the Redskins are coming. At all. Hell, maybe they’re right, but not because they know something we don’t. If people are doubting on the Redskins today, it is because the Redskins have inspired doubt over the years among the national audience. The coronation of Drew Brees as the all-time passing leader is an easy thing for fans around the country to glom onto, and the glomming will be in full force on national television. I can’t be the only Redskins fan excited about this.The most common question I get is what makes the Redskins think they have a chance at all against the Saints offense. Easy, I say: our defense. If there is a face of this Redskins team after just three games, it has to be the defense. That’s not because Adrian Peterson hasn’t been a great story, or because Alex Smith has failed to capture our hearts and minds. It is because the extremely brief and early success this Washington team has achieved thus far is due to the men on the defensive side of the ball. It is also true because for this team to have any chance at all against Drew Brees, Micheal Thomas, Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram, it has to be the defense that makes it happen. A straight offensive battle is simply going to favor the league’s—say it with me—all-time passing leader.I was trying to think of a guy that we will need to play above his level for the Skins to emerge victorious, and I keep coming back to Quinton Dunbar. That seems pretty unfair, given he has been one the highest rated corners in the league so far. The mountains up front are going to have to do what they do, but Dunbar is going to be tested by Drew Brees and we are going to learn even more about the former wide receiver than we already knew. I think we need at least one turnover from #23 and if I’m being honest, we might need to see him take it to the house. Is it cool to make a defensive touchdown one of the keys to winning tonight? Because I think I just did...and I think it is true.Let’s do two more keys to victory and then we can see how we did on tomorrow night’s podcast. First up is the run game. It would be too easy to tie too much to Adrian Peterson. No...for the Redskins to be successful tonight, they will need two running backs perform at a high level—because the New Orleans Saints will. Chris Thompson has to have over 100 yards from scrimmage and at least one score. I don’t care how he gets it, but he needs to be productive. Let’s set the target level to 20—a total of 20 total touches for CT25 will give us at least a fighting chance.The last time we played the New Orleans Saints (you remember...our quarterback and dynamic running back got injured on the same play and we couldn’t get one yard in two chances) the Redskins had a chance to make a play to seal the win. They failed to do so and Drew Brees showed the world why he is...you guessed it...the league’s all-time passing king. The last key is this: Redskins need to sneak under the pomp and pageantry of tonight’s party in the French Quarter and make a game-winning play in the fourth quarter. It can be as simple as the quarterback sneak we failed to call and execute last year, or it can be a play made on the defensive side of the ball that results in the announcer saying, “Wow...that should just about do it tonight to lock up a victory for the Washington Redskins.” Nobody sees Washington coming, but that means absolutely nothing for a group led by what is already proving to be one of the league’s meanest defenses. You can’t win without making that last play. We have seen this team make that play already this season, but tonight Dexter Manley Jersey , the entire country is watching. He started at corner in 12 of 13 games recording 3 interceptions, returning 2 of them for touchdowns, but also was a standout on special teams where he recorded 5 blocked kicks. However in March 2015 after his freshman season, Moreland and two other teammates were charged with petty larceny of less than $200 not from a person from an incident that February. Then coach Everett Williams dismissed Moreland from the team later that June. Moreland spent the 2015 season watching from the stands and working out on his own in hopes of earning his way back on to the roster. When new coach Mike Houston was hired in January of 2016, he gave Moreland an opportunity to rejoin the team for spring practice. Moreland seized his opportunity and went on to shine for the Dukes.Jimmy MF Moreland finished his RS-Senior season as a consensus first team All-American and a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award for the top defensive player in the FCS. He finished tied for ninth in the league with 5 interceptions, but 1st in the league in interceptions returned for a TD with 3 (all 3 coming in consecutive games). He is JMU’s all-time leader in interceptions (18) and interceptions returned for a TD (6), only 1 shy of the FCS all-time record. He participated in the East-West Shrine Game and was one of the standouts during the week of practice. He measured in smaller than his listed height, coming in at 5’9 戮”, but showed off his athleticism and ball skills. He impressed enough to earn an invite to the Senior Bowl, the first JMU player to do so. He is quickly climbing draft boards as more eyes are getting on this FCS product.StrengthsTwitchy. This is a word you will see used a lot with Moreland. He’s got quick feet and good hip movement allowing him to stay with receivers and recover quickly.Ball skills. He obviously has the stats, being JMU’s all-time leader in interceptions, but watching film, you can see it’s his ability to get his head and hips around and find the football that makes him such a ball hawk.Aggressiveness. His aggression helps make up for his size. It also helps in the run game. Despite being under 180 lbs, he has no problem sticking his nose in to make a tackle.Special teams skills. Has shown an ability to block kicks and could be a factor in the return game. Returned a missed FG at the Shrine Game for 61 yards.WeaknessesSpeed. Got beat a few times in flat out foot races. They played 3 different rookies at corner last season and could (read should) part ways with disappointment Josh Norman, saving $8.5M of cap space. That leaves them with Fabian Moreau, Quinton Dunbar, and the 3 previously mentioned rookies. Those players only accounted for 4 of the Redskins 15 interceptions last season. Moreland could be the ball hawk the Redskins need. His aggressiveness combined with his lack of top end speed means he will get beat deep occasionally, but that same aggressiveness will lead to support in the run game and turnovers. Washington has bigger needs elsewhere, including the back-end of the secondary, so they will most likely wait on a corner unless the right one falls in their lap. So Moreland may be climbing too high on draft boards for them to snag him, but if he’s available on day 3, the Redskins could pick up one of the biggest sleepers in the draft.

After the last week, I was at least a little bit concerned about being able to write those words again. From the atrocious performance of the team against the Indianapolis Colts to the aftermath associated with low turnout at FedEx Field, it was a long week. In this space last week, we called it the way we saw it. Turd-polishing can and will take place here, but the taste in all of our mouths after that loss was too terrible to go that route. What we did say though, was that the Redskins were not as good as they looked against Arizona, but not as bad as they looked against Indy. With three games under our belt—and with a win over a very respected opponent—it is fair to say that was and is true. In fact, I think we could be inching closer to calling the Indy game a bit of an anomaly, though just thinking about inching closer to that is all I’m prepare to do today.Anytime you emerge victorious from a game against Aaron Rodgers, you have to call that a big win. I understand the guy is hurt—it is the easiest thing to see and recognize when watching the Packers. If he was unable to help his team win, he wouldn’t have been on the field. Despite the banged up wheel, Rodgers still hurt the Redskins...with his legs. His throws were still accurate, and his decision-making, vision and toughness were all pretty much as you would expect out of a player like that. I won’t belabor this point: we aren’t chalking this win up to a weak opponent, as has been the raging discussion leading into week three. A win over the Green Bay Packers is a big deal for this Redskins team. Period. I have been standing on my chair since the summer talking about the fun prospect of getting to watch this Redskins defense. Healthy, we knew they would be talented and mean. They have been healthy, and they have been mean. This defense has played well enough for the Redskins to be 3-0, and that is saying something that we haven’t been able to say for a long time. Though we are talking about just a three-game sample size (almost a fifth of a season), the Skins are giving up a hair over 14 points per game, and a hair under 280 yards per game. We’ll see where they go from here, but at this point, it puts the Redskins at or near the top of the league when you want to talk about top defenses right now. What isn’t a surprise is that things are starting up front. Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne are playing as advertised at the point of attack. Allen had two sacks yesterday and Payne added one. Matt Ioannidis had one of the studliest sacks you can get—where you bring down the quarterback while being completely blocked. He took down Rodgers and his blocker <a title="Russ Grimm Jersey" href="http://www.redskinsjerseyproshop.com/russ-grimm-jersey/">Russ Grimm Jersey</a> , and it was glorious. Many people will note that the Packers were able to get off some runs, and try to pin that on the line, but Greg Manusky told reporters he wasn’t using his secondary to help against the run much (which makes sense when you are playing Aaron Rodgers). A few missed tackles—some of which definitely had to do with the rainy weather—gave the Packers a chance, but overall, the front seven stood extremely tall. In my humble opinion, this team is currently defined by the defense, and I would be shocked if that opinion wasn’t shared by most of you reading this today. Think about that...an offensive-minded guru like Jay Gruden at the helm of a team that through three weeks has taken on the persona of a defensive-minded team.I will say that I was perplexed by the manner in which Green Bay seemed to commit mistakes at the exact wrong moments. Not upset, mind you, but perplexed. If I’m being completely honest, some of the drops I saw (especially from Randall Cobb and Lance Hendricks) are the kinds of drops I have seen the Redskins make in the past. Doing exactly what it takes to lose was our calling card for a...while. This is another great development for the burgundy and gold. Against a good opponent, it was the opponent and not the Redskins committing the kinds of mistakes that prevent you from winning. I think the Green Bay offense knew its margin of error was slim, and I think they played a little bit tight and scared as a result. There is almost no other explanation for the frequency with which the Packers committed their most costly errors, since I am not currently entertaining any narrative that suggests the Packers and the Cardinals are in the same kind of sinking boat. #QuietCompetenceWelcome to the party, Paul Richardson! For those of us who both called for and celebrated his signing, the long ball touchdown to get the day started was amazing. Without trying to compare him to other players that have similar roles, Richardson showed speed, control and playmaking ability on that play. He adjusted to the ball in the air and had the good sense to find the end zone. He drew some pass interference and he drew the attention of the safeties, both of which set up the offense for success all day long. We know that Alex Smith can and will throw the deep ball, and we have seen what that looks like with Tyreek Hill running go routes. Richardson appears to be capable of stretching the field, but I fully expect to see Jay Gruden begin to use Richardson in even more ways than just a lid-remover. There are some cool ways this offense can evolve if and when defenses start to really take Richardson seriously. We saw a little of that with Jordan Reed and Jamison Crowder yesterday. Once the targets start getting distributed far and wide, perhaps...perhaps...perhaps even Josh Doctson will get in on the action. (I am going to hold out on this one, guys. Does anyone else feel that way? I mean, the first three weeks of the 2018 campaign have absolutely drained me. As far as things to process with the week off, we have plenty: a road conference win, a home conference win, an ugly out-of-conference loss, a response to embarrassment/adversity, a return on a first-round pick investment and the discovery of life left in a 33-year old Hall of Fame-bound running back. That maybe just scratches the surface. On the bye week, I know I will paying attention to the Colts, Packers and Cardinals to try and glean further insight into what exactly our first three weeks truly means on the field. I will be hoping Trent Williams, Morgan Moses and Josh Norman—to name but a few guys—use the down time to heal up for week five and beyond. I’ll be rooting for the Saints, the Titans and the Lions as they face our divisional brethren. Most of us prefer a later bye week, but it wouldn’t be hard to argue for the positives of this early bye for the Washington Redskins and its fans. I think we have seen just enough to shelve the negativity that so easily flowed after the Colts loss. This group of players can compete. They can win. We get thirteen more chances to prove it. Take a deep breath, y’all. The home stretch is going to be quite a ride! There were moments last season and early this offseason when it seemed Dwayne Haskins could be the first quarterback selected in 2019.He turned out the be the third quarterback off the board. Washington selected Haskins with the 15th pick in the first round.There were plenty of rumors about Washington moving up from the No. 15 in the days leading up to the draft and Haskins was thought to be the target of their attention, but it turned out that they go their man without giving up anything. Word that the team had interest in trading for Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen would also seem to be moot at this point.Haskins will join Case Keenum and Colt McCoy on the roster with Alex Smith‘s future uncertain after last year’s broken leg. If the other three are healthy — McCoy has leg issues of his own — it will be interesting to see how head coach Jay Gruden sets up the quarterback competition.However it shakes out in the short term, it’s obvious that the long-term plan is for Haskins to be the man.

DENVER (AP) — Case Keenum already has this fourth-quarter comeback thing down pat.Nail-biters are almost a prerequisite for a quarterback in Denver, where John Elway set the standard with 31 fourth-quarter comebacks and Peyton Manning added 11 of his league-best 43 while wearing navy and orange.Keenum, the architect of the “Minnesota Miracle” in the playoffs last year, followed his comeback win in his Denver debut by leading the Broncos to a 20-19 come-from-behind win against Oakland on Sunday.Brandon McManus kicked a 36-yard field goal just inside the right upright with 6 seconds left, capping a comeback from a 12-point second-half deficit.“Anytime you have a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, it feels pretty awesome,” Keenum said. “Last week was fun. This week was a lot of fun. They’re all special. And this is an incredible start, my first two games here at Mile High.”The comeback denied Jon Gruden his first win as a head coach since 2008 — and his first against Denver since 2001.“It’s a tough loss,” Gruden said after falling to 1-10 against Denver. “Really proud of our team. We had opportunities I think to come out of here with a win. I credit Denver.”With no timeouts and 18 seconds left, Keenum hit Tim Patrick for a 26-yard gain to the Oakland 18. Cornerbacks Gareon Conley and Leon Hall couldn’t tackle him inbounds and McManus came on to give the Broncos their first lead.“I knew I had plenty of time to go up the field,” Patrick said. “I just wanted to get as much yardage as I could while getting out of bounds at the same time.”The Raiders (0-2) lost despite Derek Carr completing 29 of 32 passes for 288 yards and a score four days after Gruden called him out for passing up throws to Amari Cooper in Oakland’s opener.Cooper caught 10 passes for 116 yards Sunday.“I don’t think Derek threw an incompletion today,” Keenum marveled. “I never saw the ball hit the ground when he was out there. That’s unbelievable to play quarterback like that.“But we just kept fighting. We’ve got a lot of fighters in that locker room.”The Broncos (2-0) trailed 19-7 late in the third quarter before McManus hit a 39-yarder and Keenum scored on a 1-yard keeper on fourth down with 5:58 left.Denver’s defense held and the Broncos got the ball back at their 20 with 1:58 left. A holding call pushed them back 10 yards but Keenum hit Emmanuel Sanders for 21 yards and Jake Butt for 14.The Raiders limited the Broncos to just two first downs in the first half. Mike Nugent kicked two field goals and Marshawn Lynch’s 1-yard dive late in the second quarter made it 12-0 but Shaq Barrett blocked the extra point.“Who knew that would be huge?” Keenum asked.“I’m mad as hell about that play,” Raiders right tackle Donald Penn said. “But even without that play, we should have closed out that game. We had many opportunities to. We’ve got to find ways to get better.”LOCAL HERODenver’s Philip Lindsay, an undrafted rookie from Aurora Eddie Vanderdoes Jersey , Colorado, who wasn’t even invited to the NFL combine after a stellar career at the University of Colorado, totaled 111 yards from scrimmage.
